TeletherapyTraditional CareSide-by-SideOnline SessionIn-Person BetterTeletherapy BetterHow to ChooseBook OnlineFAQ

The Short Answer

Teletherapy and traditional clinic visits are both legitimate ways to see a **PRC-licensed** mental health professional in the Philippines. Online therapy is usually faster to book, removes travel, and works well from anywhere with a stable internet connection; in-person care is better for active crises, physical exams, or when you simply prefer face-to-face. The right choice depends on your situation, not on whether one is "real" care.

If you're trying to decide between booking an online therapy session and seeing someone in person, you're not choosing between "real" care and a lesser substitute. Both are legitimate ways to get support from a licensed professional. The right one just depends on your situation.

Chapter 01

## What Is Teletherapy (Online Therapy)?

Teletherapy means meeting with a licensed psychiatrist, psychologist, or counselor through video call instead of in an office. In the Philippines, this usually happens through a platform like Saya, where you book a time slot, join a secure video session, and talk with your provider the same way you would face-to-face, just through a screen.

Everything else about the relationship works the same way: your provider still develops a treatment plan, tracks your progress across sessions, and can prescribe medication where appropriate. A [**PRC-licensed psychiatrist**](/online-psychiatrist-philippines) can issue an e-prescription for online sessions in the Philippines.

Chapter 02

## What Is Traditional (In-Person) Care?

Traditional care means physically going to a clinic or hospital to meet your provider. This is the model most Filipinos grew up with, and it's still the right choice for certain situations, which we'll get into below.

Chapter 03

## Teletherapy vs. Traditional Care: Side-by-Side

Here's a quick comparison of how the two formats actually differ in day-to-day experience.

Feature

Teletherapy (Online)

Traditional (In-Person)

Where you go

Anywhere with a stable internet connection

A physical clinic or hospital

Travel time

None

Commute time, often 30 min–2 hrs in Metro Manila traffic

Availability

Often same-week or next-day booking

Can involve waitlists, especially for psychiatrists outside Metro Manila

Access outside major cities

Same access regardless of location

Limited in provinces with few licensed providers

Privacy

Session happens wherever you feel comfortable and private

No risk of being interrupted at home, but requires leaving the house

Typical cost

Often lower, since providers save on clinic overhead

Can include facility fees on top of the provider's rate

Technology needed

Stable internet, a device with camera and mic

None

Best for

Busy schedules, provincial access, first-time therapy, follow-ups

Situations needing physical examination, in-person crisis support, or a strong in-person preference

If you want current rates for either format, check our [**pricing page**](/pricing) for session details.

Chapter 04

## What to Expect During an Online Session

If you've never done teletherapy before, the process is more straightforward than people expect:

**1\. Book a session.** Choose a provider based on their specialty and availability, and pick a time slot that works for you.

**2\. Fill out a short intake form.** This covers your background and what brought you in, so your provider has context before you start talking.

**3\. Join the video call at your scheduled time.** You'll get a link a few minutes before your session. On Saya, sessions are held over a secure Google Meet call.

**4\. Talk through what's going on, the same way you would in person.** Your provider will ask questions, listen, and start building a plan with you.

**5\. Get a summary or next steps after the session.** This may include a follow-up booking, or an e-prescription if your psychiatrist determines medication is appropriate.

Most first sessions run 45–60 minutes. You don't need any special setup beyond a quiet space and a stable connection.

Chapter 05

## When Traditional Care Might Be the Better Fit

Online therapy isn't the right call for everyone, every time. In-person care tends to make more sense when:

You're in an active crisis and need immediate, physical support rather than a scheduled session

Your case involves a physical exam or diagnostic test your provider needs to do in person

You've tried teletherapy and personally find it harder to open up without being in the same room

You don't have consistent access to private space or a stable internet connection

If you're unsure whether your situation calls for urgent, in-person help, the Philippines' [**mental health hotlines**](/blog/mental-health-hotlines-philippines) are a good first stop.

Chapter 06

## When Teletherapy Makes More Sense

Online sessions tend to work especially well if:

You live outside Metro Manila and don't have easy access to a licensed psychiatrist or psychologist nearby

Your schedule makes it hard to commit to travel time on top of the session itself

You're an OFW or based abroad and want a Filipino therapist who understands your context (more on that [**here**](/blog/ofw-mental-health))

You'd feel more comfortable opening up from a familiar space than an unfamiliar office

You're looking for lower-cost care, since therapy in the Philippines often costs less online once you account for facility fees and travel

Chapter 07

## So, Which Should You Choose?

There's no wrong answer here. Many people actually use both at different points, starting online for convenience, or switching to in-person if a specific need comes up. What matters most is getting started with someone licensed and qualified, whichever format makes that easiest for you to actually follow through on.

If you are unsure which type of professional you need first, read our guide on [**psychiatrists vs. psychologists vs. counselors**](/blog/psychiatrist-vs-psychologist-counselor-guide), or our guide on [**how to choose the right therapist**](/blog/how-to-choose-the-right-therapist).

Next Step

## Booking a Licensed Practitioner Online

Saya connects Filipino clients with PRC-licensed psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors for virtual sessions held over Google Meet. Every [**practitioner profile**](/therapists) lists credentials, specializations, languages, and availability upfront, so you can compare options and book in a few minutes.

You can also browse directly by role: [**online psychiatrists**](/online-psychiatrist-philippines) or [**online psychologists**](/online-psychologist-philippines).

This article is for informational purposes and is not a substitute for professional medical or psychological advice. If you are in crisis or need immediate support, please reach out to a [**mental health hotline**](/blog/mental-health-hotlines-philippines) or emergency services right away.

### Not sure where to start?

Describe how you're feeling and we'll match you with the right therapist.

You can also type in Tagalog or Taglish — e.g. "Lagi akong malungkot" or "I feel anxious lagi"
