I felt that my concerns were addressed. Dr. Yu has a way of wording things that makes me feel really understood. He's empathetic and good with responses. I felt safe and reassured during our session. I'd definitely book another session with Dr. Yu.

    About Dr. Robert Yu

Hi, I'm Robert! My path into psychiatry started out as an interest in abnormal human behavior. I am motivated by seeing my patients grow to accept themselves, their problems, and their lives. I want those I work with to know that I value deep conversations and a genuine connection. When I'm not working, I enjoy unwinding with video games or exploring new ideas through books and podcasts. My goal is to continue my practice while bringing vital resources to my province, specifically by establishing a local ECT service.

    My Approach to Psychiatric Care

My approach focuses on understanding your situation and needs. It does not focus on diagnostic jargon and therapy speak. I do not believe in medicalizing everything a person experiences. I believe all good psychiatric care must start with understanding. In order for us to formulate the best care for you, I would need to understand the person that you are and the situation that you're in. That is why the initial consult is usually the heaviest when it comes to questions. However, I also believe that these talks take time. It should not be rushed and it is at your own comfort. Rome was not built in a day. Your journey towards wellness would not be either. Next would be collaboration. You would always be involved in decision making. The simple reason for that is that it is your life we are trying to help. Your say matters as much or even more than mine. Psychiatrists help people deal with their problems as a profession, so we see ourselves as experts in problem solving especially when it comes to our thoughts, feelings, behavior and our relationships with people around us. Lastly and most importantly, I would always involve validation. No matter what situation you are in, your feelings are always valid. This is my personal belief as a psychiatrist. I do not believe I can dictate how people feel. What I can do would be to share my perspective on the fact that sometimes, even though feelings and actions are valid, they are not always helpful. So my approach would involve opening a conversation on the advantages and disadvantages of said behavior.
